Transitions: Complex Safeguarding

Complex Safeguarding Teams engage some of the most vulnerable young people in Greater Manchester. However, because the support is provided by a statutory service, once a young person turns 18 they can no longer access support services in the same way they did as children. In many cases, professional levels of support through this vital transition are very restricted.

Over the past two years, Citywall has worked to support the transition of these young people to adulthood by providing mentoring after their 18th birthday. Young people access sessions around relationships, safety planning and preparing for adulthood. The work is bespoke, flexible and collaborative to ensure that the young people are empowered to take the steps of change they want to see in their lives.

What are the objectives of the project?

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable young people.

  • Build social skills and resilience through 1:1 mentoring.

  • Increase aspirations and motivation for the future to increase protective factors and help prevent further exploitation.

  • Support the transition to adult or universal services.

What are the expected outcomes?

  • Young people engage in a regular programme of 1:1 mentoring.

  • A range of dynamic assessments show an increase in resilience and aspirations for the young person as the programme progresses.

  • Successful integration into community life, measured through engagement with family; education, training or employment; professional services and other productive social activities.

  • Young people have increased levels of self-esteem.

  • Each young person has a bespoke action plan, identifying areas they would like to improve.
