HMP Hindley

This is a partnership between Citywall and HMP Hindley to provide personalised and bespoke support for some of the most vulnerable young adults in custody (18-21 year olds), and their families. Citywall and Hindley are committed to interrupting the cycle of reoffending and repeated custodial sentences, and the primary focus is early intervention to provide meaningful support and tangible outcomes.

Citywall mentors provide a safe space for processing thoughts, feelings and aspirations. This may include:

  • Their experience of custody.

  • The impact of substance misuse, violence and organised crime.

  • Relationships in custody and the community.

What are the objectives of the project?

  • Reduce violence in HMP Hindley and promote the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable young adults.

  • Improve relationships between young adults and their families.

  • Improve circumstances for families in the community by tackling practicalities.

  • Build social skills and resilience to equip for life in custody and the community.

  • Increase aspirations and motivation to reduce the risk of further crime, exploitation or violence.

  • Support engagement with wider services

What are the expected outcomes?

  • Young adults engage in a regular programme of 1:1 mentoring.

  • Family relationships are strengthened.

  • A range of dynamic assessments and the Justice Star (part of the Outcomes Star suite) show an increase in resiliency and aspirations in the young person as the programme progresses.

  • Reduction in violence and improved wellbeing, measured through engagement with family and support services.
